INTRODUCTION STERILE OAT
Sterile Oat (Avena sterilis) is a monocot weed in the Poaceae family.  In Italy this weed first evolved multiple resistance (to 2 herbicide sites of action) in 2004 and infests Durum wheat.  Multiple resistance has evolved to herbicides in the Groups 1 (Legacy A), and Inhibition of Acetolactate Synthase HRAC Group 2 (Legacy B).  These particular biotypes are known to have resistance to clodinafop-propargyl, cycloxydim, iodosulfuron-methyl-Na, mesosulfuron-methyl, and pinoxaden and they may be cross-resistant to other herbicides in the Groups 1 (Legacy A), and Inhibition of Acetolactate Synthase HRAC Group 2 (Legacy B).

CROSS RESISTANCE

Most of the multiple-resistant populations show resistance to clodinafop and Atlantis WG, while three populations are resistant to the ALS tested, clodinafop, pinoxaden, cycloxydim.

FIELD HISTORIES

Field histories highlight that where resistance developed, fields had had at least 5 treatments with ACCase inhibitors. Often, but not always, the cropping system was a wheat monoculture. However, where rotation was adopted, the other crops (i.e. autumn sown sugarbeet, clover) were often treated with an ACCase inhibitor. Until the mid-nineties diclofop was the usual selecting agent while later, fenoxaprop and especially clodinafop were often used.

Confirmation Tests

Greenhouse trials comparing a known susceptible Sterile Oat biotype with this Sterile Oat biotype have been used to confirm resistance. For further information on the tests conducted please contact the local weed scientists that provided this information.
 
Genetics

Genetic studies on HRAC Group 1, 2 resistant Sterile Oat have not been reported to the site.  There may be a note below or an article discussing the genetics of this biotype in the Fact Sheets and Other Literature
